Peptides are short chains of amino acids linked together by peptide bonds. While proteins can contain hundreds or thousands of amino acids folded into complex structures, peptides are typically much shorter, ranging from just two amino acids up to around fifty.
A peptide bond forms when the carboxyl group of one amino acid reacts with the amino group of another, releasing a water molecule in the process. This reaction, repeated many times, builds a chain with a distinct sequence, and that sequence determines the peptide’s shape and chemical behavior.
The line between a peptide and a protein is somewhat arbitrary and based on length and structural complexity rather than a strict rule. Peptides generally lack the elaborate secondary and tertiary folding seen in larger proteins, though some longer peptides do adopt stable structures like helices or loops.
The order of amino acids in a peptide chain is what gives it specific chemical and structural properties. Even a single amino acid substitution can significantly change how a peptide interacts with its environment, which is part of why sequence accuracy is so important in any research context involving synthetic peptides.
Peptides occur naturally throughout biology, playing roles in cell signaling and structural biology. Synthetic peptides are manufactured in laboratories to closely mirror these natural sequences, allowing researchers to study specific biological mechanisms under controlled conditions.
