Not all peptides degrade at the same rate. Stability depends heavily on the specific amino acid sequence, since certain amino acids and bonds are more chemically vulnerable to breakdown than others.
Higher temperatures generally accelerate chemical degradation reactions, which is why proper cold storage is so consistently emphasized for peptide products, particularly once they’ve been reconstituted into liquid solution.
Lyophilized peptides can absorb moisture from the surrounding air if not properly sealed, and that absorbed moisture can promote degradation reactions that wouldn’t occur in a properly dried, sealed sample.
Certain peptide sequences are sensitive to light exposure, which can drive photodegradation over time. Storing samples in amber vials or opaque packaging helps protect against this where relevant.
Repeatedly freezing and thawing a reconstituted peptide solution can accelerate degradation and, in some cases, promote aggregation. Aliquoting solutions into smaller single-use portions before freezing is a common practice to avoid this issue.
